A Song for a Smile



Charity Gala Dinner

On Saturday evening, July 11, nearly 400 guests and celebrities joined together to raise funds for a new charity hospital in Kunming.


Hefei and Zhengzhou Mission Report - April 29 to May 4, 2007



Two Operation Smile international teams of medical and non-medical volunteers are in China to provide free medical evaluations and surgery to children born with facial deformities. Each team consists of nearly 50 medical professionals from the Australia, Brazil, Canada, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and from the United States, who are working with their in-country Chinese counterparts to provide patients with life-changing surgeries.

One Operation Smile team is in Hefei and consists of plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, a pediatric intensivist, a dentist, speech therapist and others are working at Anhui Children's Hospital. The other Operation Smile team is in Zhengzhou and consists of plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, a pediatric intensivist, a dentist, speech therapist and others are working at Zhengzhou No. 1 People's Hospital to treat children and young adults suffering with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.

This is the first Operation Smile international medical mission to Hefei, and the second to Zhengzhou. Since its first international mission in 1991, Operation Smile medical volunteers have provided free medical evaluations to more than 10,000 children suffering with facial deformities and more than 6,000 have received free reconstructive surgery during international missions.


Operation Smile's Shanghai International Plastic Surgery Conference



The Second Shanghai International Plastic Surgery Conference, co-sponsored by Operation Smile and the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital was a tremendous success. The conference was held in Shanghai, China, from April 18 - 20, 2007. Dr. Bill Magee, co-founder and CEO of Operation Smile and Dr. Yilin Cao of the Ninth People's Hospital were co-chairs for the conference, and the scientific committee was headed by Dr. Liu Wei of the Ninth People's Hospital and Dr. W.P. Andy Lee of the University of Pittsburgh. The conference had more than 300 participants and included lectures given by 45 speakers from Australia, China, Europe, Japan, Korea, Singapore and the U.S.A. Operation Smile was to host several speakers who have long standing histories with the organization. It was exciting to see the academic exchanges taking place between old friends and new.


Smile for A Child Supper Club Event



The Smile for A Child Supper Club Event was held on May 13 and included 30 dinner parties throughout Hong Kong which were hosted by Operation Smile supporters. Later that night, the 400 guests were picked up and taken to a secret location for a surprise after party: the Shaw Film Studios, where they were entertained by the Abba revival band, Bjorn Again, flown in for the evening's festivities. The event raised $150,000 for OSCMM's programs.


KABB & Blue Frog Event



On Friday, September 8, Blue Frog restaurant celebrated the opening of its newest venue in Pudong and all proceeds from the event were donated to Operation Smile. The party-goers enjoyed a barbecue, drinks on the deck, and music which was provided by a guest DJ. With an entrance fee of RMB 50 per person, the event raised RMB 21,220 for Operation Smile.

For the past three years, the restaurant group KABB & Blue Frog (www.kabbsh.com) has been supporting Operation Smile along with two other children's charities in Shanghai as a part of its corporate social responsibility program.


Denise Ho Travels to Operation Smile Mission Site in Xian



Popular singer, Denise Ho, Ambassador of the Xian Operation Smile International Mission, traveled to Xian in April 2006 with the team of international medical volunteers. The team provided free medical evaluations for 222 children and young adults and 166 patients received surgery thanks to Operation Smile volunteers.

Ms. Ho said, "I'd seen pictures before, but it's totally different to meet face to face. The children are so brave to put up with the pain and repeated treatments, and they deserve our full support." Ms. Ho was also deeply moved by the love and dedication of the doctors and nurses. She took some presents like pencils and stickers along with her. They were just small gifts, but the children were very happy to receive them. Ms. Ho said she will never forget the children she met during her three-day trip to the mission site.


Ms. Niki Chow named Operation Smile China Medical Mission "Smile" Ambassador



Prominent actress and singer, Niki Chow was named Operation Smile China Medical Mission, Ltd. (OSCMM) Smile Ambassador.

The announcement was made during an April 26 press conference which was well attended by the Hong Kong media.

Ms. Chow attended the charity movie night event, "Smile Possible; Mission Impossible III" organized by Victoria Junior Chamber on May 5. Proceeds from the event raised HK$ 55,000.00 and helped raise awareness for Operation Smile.

Victoria Junior Chamber (VJC), founded in 1950, is a non-profit making organization dedicated to developing leadership potentials among young people.


Marriott Hotel Shanghai & Suzhou Employees Raise Funds for Operation Smile



Associates from five hotels in the Marriott Hotel Shanghai and Suzhou cluster have donated a portion of their salary to Operation Smile China Medical Mission, Ltd. (OSCMM).

During the September 12 ceremony at the Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel, general managers, Mr. Roger Fung and Mr. John Northern, presented a check in the amount of RMB 100,000 to OSCMM representatives.

Marriott International's "Spirit to Serve" philosophy reflects the genuine desire of its associates to give resources, time and energy to help make a difference in the lives of others. Marriott Hotel Associates have also volunteered on Operation Smile missions serving as translators. "Donations of time, services are as important as writing checks. We encourage our associates to involve in activities that support our communities in numerous ways. We want every community where Marriott has a presence to be a better place to live and work because we are there," said Mr. Northern.
