Liu's Story

"When I was four years old, I was abandoned to the streets. Not only was my face sealed by an obvious handicap, my cleft lip and cleft palate, I was mentally handicapped as well. There was no hope for me – until Jia hong Liu came along. Homeless himself, Jia found me on the side of a rural road and embraced me as his own. Jia knew about Operation Smile and that a team was coming to Nanjing. Though days away from the mission site, Jia made it a priority that I have my lip repaired. With no money for travel, he carried me in his arms until a kind stranger along the way gave us money for the bus.

After four more hours, we made it too Nanjing.

Throughout my treatment, Jia clung to my side. The Operation Smile team understood why. If you look closely at my dear Jia, the faint scar of a cleft lip repair is visible on his face."
